Yes — every state and territory in Australia allows home-based food businesses, but you must register with your local council as a 'home-based food business' and comply with Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) guidelines. Most councils require a Food Safety Supervisor certificate and a basic kitchen inspection. Fees are usually under $200 per year.

Click 'Sign Up' in the top-right corner, choose 'Seller' as your role, and complete your profile with a photo, short bio, and your suburb. Then hit 'Post a Meal' — our four-step wizard walks you through dish details, pricing, up to 5 photos, and availability. An admin reviews new listings within 24 hours and you're live.

Each cook chooses their own fulfillment method: pickup only, delivery within a set radius, or both. You'll see the exact options on every listing before you order. Payment and pickup times are agreed in the in-app chat directly between buyer and cook.

It's not legally mandatory in most Australian states, but we strongly recommend public liability insurance ($30–$50/month typically). It protects you if a buyer ever claims illness or an allergic reaction. Some councils require it for renewal.

Eat From Local doesn't process payments directly today — buyers and cooks agree on payment (cash on pickup, bank transfer, or PayID) via the in-app messaging. This keeps fees at zero. A built-in payment option is on our roadmap.

Every listing includes dietary tags (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, halal, nut-free, dairy-free). Before ordering, message the cook to confirm the specific ingredients — home cooks are generally happy to adjust recipes and can tell you exactly what's in the dish, unlike a big kitchen.

Absolutely. In fact 'Baked Goods' and 'Desserts' are two of the most popular categories on Eat From Local. Shelf-stable items like cookies, cakes, jams, and pickles are especially well suited to home businesses because they don't require cold-chain delivery.
